The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Let’s face it—your makeup tools go through a lot. From foundation and powders to creams and gels, brushes and sponges are in constant contact with your skin, products and the elements. Yet many of us forget one essential beauty habit: cleaning our makeup brushes and sponges regularly.

Not only does this simple task help your makeup go on more smoothly, but it also protects your skin from breakouts and irritation. Wondering how to clean makeup brushes the right way? We’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

Why Is It Important to Clean Your Brushes and Sponges?

Your brushes and sponges collect more than just leftover makeup—they also harbor oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. Over time, these contaminants can lead to clogged pores, acne and even skin infections.

Clean tools not only keep your skin healthier but also help your makeup products perform better and last longer. Plus, taking care of your brushes extends their lifespan, saving you money in the long run.

How Often Should You Clean Makeup Brushes?

This is one of the most common questions we hear at Lisa Brown SalonSpa. Ideally, you should clean your brushes:

  • Foundation & Concealer Brushes: Once a week
  • Eye Brushes: Once every 1–2 weeks
  • Powder Brushes: Every 2–3 weeks
  • Lip Brushes: After every use

For makeup sponges, the rule is even stricter. Because they absorb so much product and moisture, it’s best to wash them after every use and replace them every 3 months.

How to Clean Makeup Brushes

1. Use a Makeup Brush Gentle Cleanser

Use a brush-specific cleanser, such as Cinema Secrets Original Makeup Brush Cleaner (You can purchase this at Lisa Brown SalonSpa and Brown Beauty Barber School for a great price!). Dip ¼ of the brush into the solution at a time.

2. Swirl and Rinse

Gently swirl the brush in the solution, wipe clean on a paper towel or towel. Continue the process until the brush is both visibly clean and when wiping on the towel, no debris is remaining.

3. Squeeze and Reshape

Gently squeeze out excess product with a clean towel, reshape the bristles and lay flat to dry on a towel with the head hanging off the edge of a counter. This helps maintain the brush shape and avoids mildew.

How to Clean Makeup Sponges

1. Soak in Warm Water

Dampen the sponge completely.

2. Lather with Cleanser

Apply a cleanser, like Cinema Secrets Original Makeup Brush Cleaner, directly onto the sponge and massage to release makeup and oils. Using Cinema Secrets soap allows you to roll the sponge in the soap bar and then use a scrubber to release any oils, makeup, debris.

3. Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse until the water runs clear. You may need to repeat the process a few times for deeper stains.

4. Squeeze and Air Dry

Gently squeeze out excess water and let the sponge dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid sealing it in a bag or drawer until it’s fully dry to prevent mold.
